Hothouse Flowers

This series of photos of plant life in urban settings began in 2018 with a single image: a silhouette of leaves pressed against a Soho window that was bathed in condensation and light. I liked the fact that it looked like a greenhouse, not a city street, while it sparked thoughts about urbanisation, overcrowding and climate change.
When lockdown came, the series gained new momentum as the plants became symbolic of our own isolated status, trapped in the wrong setting, itching to get out. The works were shown together as part of Select/21 at Photofusion, London.

Hothouse Flowers was a street photography project, shot in London and New York between 2018 and 2021. The images were captured on 35mm film and hand-printed in the darkroom at Photofusion, London.
